Is Uranium Glass Safe to Wear?

Yes! and here's why:

• Very small amount of uranium: Uranium glass (often called Vaseline glass) typically contains 0.1% to 2% uranium oxide mixed into the glass.

• The uranium is locked inside the glass. Unless the glass is ground into dust or broken and ingested, it doesn't easily escape.

• Radiation exposure is very low. Most pieces emit only slightly more radiation than normal background levels. For typical jewelry, the dose from wearing it occasionally or even regularly is considered negligible.

When should you be cautious?

• Don't grind, cut, or polish it without proper safety equipment. Glass dust is hazardous on its own, and uranium-containing dust should definitely not be inhaled.

• Avoid letting young children chew on it. This is more about broken glass and potential ingestion than radiation.

• Don't use damaged pieces if they're cracked and could shed fragments.

What about skin contact?

Touching uranium glass is not a concern. Alpha radiation (the primary radiation from uranium) cannot penetrate your skin. The tiny amounts of beta and gamma radiation emitted by most uranium glass are also very low. All

Does it glow because it's radioactive?

Not exactly. The famous bright green glow happens under ultraviolet (UV) light because the uranium compounds fluoresce. The glow is due to fluorescence, not because the glass is actively "glowing from radiation."

Should collectors worry?

Collectors often own shelves full of uranium glass. Even then, the radiation dose is generally low. The bigger practical concern is simply handling glass safely to avoid breakage.

Bottom line: Wearing a uranium glass necklace, bracelet, earrings, or ring is widely regarded as safe for normal use. If you have a Geiger counter, you'll likely detect elevated counts near the piece, but that doesn't mean it's emitting dangerous levels of radiation.

Does using resin to seal the glass help? 

It does not significantly block gamma radiation however does help with the following: 

• Reduces the chance for chips and breakage

• Keeps any time glass fragments contained if the piece is damaged

• Creates a barrier between the glass and the wearer

• Makes the jewelry more durable
